Pizotifen, also known as pizotylin, is a preventive medicine based on benzocycloheptane, that is used to prevent or to reduce the occurrence of migraine attacks, vascular headache and cluster tension headaches. Pizotifen can also be used as anti-depressant to cure social phobia and anxiety.
Pizotifen is usually considered as an effective treatment for migraine prevention but the medicine may cause drowsiness and weight gain.
How is Pizotifen taken?
Pizotifen is an oral medicine to be taken by mouth. At the initial stage, the patient may take a single dose every day before sleeping at night. If the patient faces no side effects, they may increase the dose gradually for three times every day. The maximum dose suggested for this benzocycloheptane based drug Pizotifen is 6 milligrams daily.
Side Effects of Pizotifen:
Pizotifen is strongly effective medicine for patients suffering from frequent migraine attacks and it is considered as a safe drug. Yet some of the side effects have been noticed in the patients using Pizotifen for the cure of chronic headaches. The common and less serious side effects includes
- Weight gain,
- Drowsiness, nausea, dizziness
- Fatigue and unusual weakness
- Headache and feeling of dry mouth.
If any of the above mentioned side effects are noticed, the patient should inform the doctor to avoid any further problems.
Some other serious side effects may include
- Vision changes
- Stomach pain
- Confusion and mood changes
- Sexual inability

How to Stop using Pizotifen safely?
If a patient observes some mild side-effects of Pizotifen and their doctor advices them to stop using Pizotifen for a period, the dose should be reduced gradually over a period of 2 weeks as that will decrease the chances of increased migraine attacks.
